OUR NEW HOME
4140 Indianola Ave. Columbus, Oh 43214
Artisan Dance Studio opened in 2012 as a small, two-room studio with only 2,500 square feet. We relied on support from Uncle Don, who helped us renovate our first space, as we had no skills at the time. He taught us demolition, how to frame walls, and hang drywall. After days of building in the studio, he would even take me out to dinner because he knew I wasn't able to afford going out to eat while trying to build this business. As we continued to work on the space, he would come show me and my boyfriend - now husband - the next steps in the renovation a couple of days a week. His kindness and generosity will never be lost on me.
After three great years in our original location, I had my first inkling that we needed to move. If you've been with us since the beginning you may remember how small those rooms were. I had a class that was so big I couldn't fit them all into one room, so I had to split them in two. Even in this small space, we offered both youth and adult classes, because I believed that everyone deserved an opportunity to dance. We started a small competition team, and a performance group for our adult students. Our ambition was bigger than that small studio, so we set out to find a bigger location to fill with new programs and dreams.
In 2015, Artisan Dance Studio moved into its second location, a great space that has served us well for over 6 years. Even during that renovation, we had to make choices about whether or not to take over the other half of the building. Would we have enough dancers to fill the space? Thanks to this wonderful community, we've had the opportunity to do just that and more.
Our second move was an experience that taught us that if we were to ever do it again... to go big!
A run-down chicken processing plant popped onto our radar as we started to run out of room once again. This time, it had more space than we could ever hope for, and an opportunity to purchase, not just rent. It was a chance to put our renovation experience to the test and make a space that was truly ours. Having lived in Clintonville for over 12 years, it felt right to give back to the community and rehabilitate an amazing piece of property with so much potential.
Our newest space has come with plenty of renovation challenges, but it is now close to completion. Being able to purchase this plot of land, with 2 seperate buildings and ample parking, makes us feel so grateful. Our new 11,000 square-foot home will have more space than we could have ever imagined, with additional studio rooms for more classes, and comfortable hangout space for families to wait. All this came with an awful lot of work on our part, and we want to give a big thank you to our contractor, Moe Hassan, who did most of the heavy lifting, and was willing to take on the challenge of turning a decrepit building into a thriving community staple.
The work is not done yet, but the finish line is in sight. It is time for the finishing touches - the dance floors, barres, paint, and the parts that will make it feel like home. We thank you for being a part of the Artisan Community. It is you that has allowed us to make this space for the community. We have a little more time to go, but are very excited to welcome you into our new forever home as soon as possible.
